SHOUTOUT!

Shoutout to my awesome mother! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MOM!

Thanks for all you have done for Brian, Morgan, and me. You're the best mom I could ever ask for, and I thank God for you! I love you as a mom, as a mentor, and as a best friend. I feel so blessed to have you in my life. Have a great one! Love you!

"In Sickness And In Health"....CHECK!

There is one televised event that I look forward to all year long - the CMA awards. I started preparing myself for this spectacular event two weeks prior to its debut. I LOVE country music, country singers, and country awards; thus, Wednesday, November 10, 2010 has been marked on my calendar for quite some time as a night of relaxation (which means absolutely NO homework), cuddling on the couch with my awesome hubby, and a complete submersion in Country Music's Finest.

For the first year in quite some time, my CMA awards viewing was cut short.

So my story begins at about 4:30 Wednesday afternoon. I started to feel a little woozy (probably from lack of sleep and stress), so I laid on the couch and relaxed a little bit and watched my favorite E! show, Keeping Up With The Kardashians. Around 5ish...the headache came. It was slight at first, nothing big...just kind of a dull annoyance. I had a meeting from 6-8 (don't worry the CMAs were being recorded), so I went! At 7, halfway through the meeting, my headache was a lot worse. I left the meeting early and came home to a somewhat sick husband. We lounged on the couch and watched the awards. Neither of us wanted to cook, so Papa John's Pizza it was!

I turned to Brian and said, "This is my favorite night since the wedding because it's just you and me, not caring about dinner and cleaning the house. It's just us hanging out and being married." He agreed. It was a good night.

Then, the headache got miserable. I went to the other couch, thinking that sitting next to Brian was maybe causing some extra pain. It didn't help. I took 2 Extra Strength Tylenol. Nothin'. Tried the good 'ole fix of a wet washcloth on my forehead. Again..nothin'. I was on my death bed.

Finally, I told Brian that we had to turn the TV off because I couldn't stand the noise or the lights (remember! this is my favorite, most looked forward to television event of the year!!!). I went to the bedroom and tried to go to sleep. That's when it hit me. I knew the night was not about to be over.

I got sick. No one likes to read details about being sick, so let's just leave it at that. I was sick.

Brian's such a good husband. He made sure I was okay. Tucked me into bed and didn't disturb me all night.

I woke up the next morning feeling a little sick, but nothing like the night before. After a couple of days of feeling a little nauseated and queezy, I finally feel a lot better. "In sickness and in health..." CHECK!!

Let's just say I probably won't be having Papa John's Pizza for quite some time...
Oh! And before I laid down that night (the second time) I turned to Brian, tears in my eyes, and said, "This is the best worst night ever!"

He laughed and said goodnight. Thank God he loves me!

Day One...Complete

Day one has come and gone, and here's the update:

Electricity was turned off.
New Electric heater was brought in.
Electricity was wired all around.
Electricity turned back on.
New heater still not on.

And yes, I MEANT to end all of those sentences in a preposition. Just because I'm an English major and correct a lot of people on their poor grammar doesn't mean I have to always speak perfectly. So if you haven't got no problem with that, then I'm sorry!

Anyway, back to the update :)
We are looking at one more day of no electricity and no heater, but it is happening a lot faster than we first thought! All in all, I think we're going to be okay...and finally warm!

And so it begins...

So as you read in my prior post, our furnace is shot...or burned...or completely full of a toxic substance:) Either way, it has to go!
And tomorrow is the day the whole process begins, so I might be saying goodbye to the blog for a few days as we deal with all of the many unknown, unnamed people that will be entering and leaving our house. I always feel so strange when I know people are chillin' in my house...so strange.
Say a prayer for our heater. I'm getting really chilly.

Adventure Number "I Don't Want This Adventure Ever Again"

We were given a wedding gift called "The Write Place," which is a plate that I can write on with expo markers, and I can put ribbons around the plate to make it festive. I LOVE this gift, and currently this is what it states:

Well, since it's that time of year where the leaves turn, the days get colder and shorter, and tests are lurking around every corner, I've decided to place a plaque outside my front door that reads:

Give Thanks. Simple enough, right? Well - I started thinking of all that I am thankful for....First of all, I'm thankful for him:

And I'm thankful for Remi:

And I'm MOST thankful for Christ:

And I'm thankful for leftover Halloween candy:):

And I thank God everyday for creating the inventor of Vanilla Coke:

And I'm so thankful to be Mrs. Brian Holik:

And I'm so so so thankful (and I bet you are, too) for my makeup:):

And I'm thankful for guns because they give me fried deer meat (my favorite) and safety:

And I'm so thankful for friends and family:

And one more thing....I am so so so so so so so thankful for this:

A carbon monoxide detector. Why?
It was Friday night after the ASU English Fall Festival (yes, we went to it), and Brian, Ethan West, and I came to the house to hang out and spend a Friday night watching tv. It was FREEZING that night outside and INSIDE our house, so we turned on the heater. (Sidenote: Our heater is gas-powered; thus, we must light a pilot for the heater to turn on. Obviously, we have not turned on the heater in quite some time (thank you 110 degree Texas weather), so Friday night was our first time to turn on the heater). We lit the pilot (and when I say we, I mean Brian, so let's blame him for this one hehe) and turned on the heater at APPROXIMATELY 9:30 pm. Ethan and I were talking in the kitchen, and a WAVE...I MEAN A WAVE...of gas came over us - our nasal passages were wiped clean with the smell of butane or whatever gas it is that powers our heater. We weren't that concerned because, well, we hadn't turned it on in a while, so we kind of expected it. So....we went to watch tv.

about 30 minutes pass.... (watched a great episode of Family Guy during this time)

And then the burning smell lurks into our nasal passages. That's right...Burning. We all three jump up at the same time to assess the situation. We, most likely, looked like Hank and Drover from Hank the Cowdog because we had no clue what we were doing, but we checked it out, and it didn't look like we had any smoke or flames. (We found out later that the wires in our furnace had burned together, so YES! there was a fire, but Hank and Drover over here didn't catch it...awesome). Since the burning smell had us a little worked up, we (and when I say we, I mean Brian..again, so I guess he's off the hook) thought it best to turn off the heater (THANK GOD WE DID OR THE HOUSE COULD HAVE BURNED DOWN!).

about 15 minutes pass....that's 45 minutes for all you non-math majors (aka me).

Another half episode of Family Guy later and this is what we hear: BEEPPPPPP BEEEEEEP BEEEEEEEEEEEEP! If you heard that sound in person (not through text), you'd be as freaked out as we were - that's right, it was the carbon monoxide detector. I don't know how much you know about carbon monoxide, so I'll inform you on the major piece of info you need to know about it.....IT KILLS YOU!

So we evacuate our house (and yes, I had to convince Ethan and Brian to PEEL their eyes away from the last 15 minutes of the episode). I called the gas company, and an emergency technician came out to assess the situation (ok - he was a lot better than Hank and Drover...let's call him Sherlock Holmes only because I don't know any other detective-type names).

So Sherlock Holmes came into the house with this high tech detector, and sure enough, our house was drowned in carbon monoxide up to level 28 (ps-the detector is supposed to alarm you at level 4 because level 4 is toxic and fatal....and yes, I said 28). Soooooo that explained the itchy throats and headaches that all three of us were feeling.

So we had to evacuate the house for 48 hours (our first two nights at my parents....cool), and air out the house.

Long story short (I know that's ironic since I just used about 234989087654 lines to tell you a 45 minute story)...we have to get a completely new furnace. Best part is - the house was built AROUND the furnace, meaning a wall and possibly a shower, and definitely two doors will have to be torn down to fix the furnace. Better part is - that means we have no heater....and it's November....and I'm a wuss when it comes to the cold. So great! Bring on the sweatshirts!!

This is one adventure that I could live without, but it has made me thankful for that little annoying beeping sound....long live Carbon Monoxide detectors...and the three of us please!

From our family to yours -

"Baby, You've Turned Into A Cook!"

So as most of you know, my Uncle Bobby has been hopsitalized for quite a while after a tragic accident with an inversion board. Bobby has lost most feeling and movement from his neck to his toes. Good news is - HE IS STARTING TO REGAIN SLIGHT SLIGHT MOVEMENT! Praise God! Bad news is - He's in Colorado...and we are all in Texas...and visiting him is very slim.

Bobby didn't get to come to the wedding, and since everyting was so hectic around the wedding time, my mom (Bobby's sister) hasn't been able to go either, but all of that mess has changed as of 1 week ago:)! Mom and my other uncle (mom's other brother...wow this is sort of getting confusing, and believe me you DON'T want me to outline my entire family tree...or Brian's for that matter) flew to Colorado to be with Bobby for a few days. They sent videos and pictures and updates and stories back to Texas through text messaging. It was great to know that my mom was getting to spend time with her older hellion of a brother!

However, when she came home last Wednesday, I figured she was a little tired from the trip and not wanting to cook dinner (and the Rangers were playing by the way), so I decided to cook dinner and take it to her house and watch the game. So I pulled out my handy dandy recipe-card cook book given to me by my awesome mother-in-law, Marilyn, and I decided to make Becky Brown's Spaghetti Cassarole. Want the recipe? Ok!

What You Need:
2 lb. hamburger meat
1/2 cup bell pepper, chopped
1/2 cup onion, chopped
2-3 bags shredded Velveeta
15.5 oz Ragu spaghetti sauce (original)
12 oz package of Spaghetti noodles
salt & pepper to taste

What You Do:
First brown the meat and add the chopped bell peper, onion, and spices.

Then, you add the spaghetti sauce and let it simmer.

In a separate pot, boil and cook 12 oz spaghetti.

Take some time to touch-up your makeup to welcome your hubby home.

Once fully cooked, drain and mix the spaghetti with the meat.

Pour 1/2 of the mixture into a 9" X 13" casserole dish. Then, sprinkle one bag of Velveeta over the mixture. Pour the other half of the mixture on top of the cheese and top with the second bag of Velveeta cheese. (DISCLAIMER: I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY WEIGHT GAIN THAT MAY OCCUR FOR PREPARING, COOKING, OR INDULGING IN THIS RECIPE. NOTE THAT I AM FULLY WARNING YOU THAT THIS RECIPE IS DELIGHTFUL, FANTASTIC, YUMMY, AND OH SO VERY FATTENING! DO NOT BLAME ME:))

Bake @ 350 degrees for 20-30 minuters until heated through.

The casserole turned out great, and we had a nice family night. Dad even liked it so much that he turned to me and said, "Baby, you've turned into a cook!" I'll take that as a compliment;) We had a fantastic dinner, and sadly, the Rangers lost that game, but they pulled out the ALCS Championship later that week!!

A Little Late

Let me sum up the last couple of weeks in one word - chaos...or stressful...or tiresome...but at the same time AWESOME!

School is winding down, which, on the one hand, is fantastic because that means we are just THAT much closer to our first Christmas together. However, on the other hand, it also means that all of our papers, units, projects, and tests are nearing due date....fantastic.

It is stressful being married and being in college. Don't get me wrong, it is SO worth it, but at the same time, it's not easy. We keep each other motivated, excited, and happy. I truly don't know how I would be able to get through this semester without Brian. He's my rock, and I thank God for him.

I know it's been a while since I posted, and I think the above statements explain why. Sorry for the delay!

I will be posting soon on the reunion dinner we had with my mom after her trip to Colorado to see my Uncle Bobby. Also, I'll be posting on our latest adventure - CARBON MONOXIDE EVACUATION ;) FUN!

Haha...we are loving every minute of every day together. We still feel so incredibly blessed to be married - what a WONDERFUL, fun, EXCITING, new, FANTASTIC, unbelievable, LOVING, eventful, and BEST RIDE OF OUR LIVES IT HAS BEEN:)

See you soon,
From our family to yours

2 Months...8 Weeks...60 Days...8 Weeks...86400 Minutes...5184000 Seconds...However You Want To Say It...WE MADE IT:)

Well one thing's for sure - we haven't killed each other yet:)
Brian and I just celebrated our 2 month anniversary. Yes, we celebrate months because that's all we have to count so far:) I can't wait for the day when we say "Happy 1 Year, Babe," or "Happy 50 Years, Babe...They've been the best 50 of my life:)"

We celebrated with a dinner prepared by yours truly! We had vegetable beef soup, a family favorite of mine. Want the recipe? Ok!

Ingredients:
Stew Meat
4 Beef Boulion Cubes
4 Cups of Water
Onion
Carrots
Celery
1 Large Can of Whole Tomatoes (You'll cut them up for the soup)
3 Large Potatoes
1 Large Can Tomato Juice
Salt, Pepper, and Chili Powder To Taste

How To:
Cook stew meat (or left over roast) in 4 cups of water with 4 beef boulion cubes. Add cut up onion, carrots, and celery (however much you like!). Cook for about 30 minutes (simmer). Add 1 large can of cut up tomatoes. Then, toss in the left over juice! Peel and chop the potatoes and add them to the pot! Then, top it off with a large can of tomato juice (if you buy the soda-sized cans, use bout 3 1/2 cans). Add salt and peper to taste and about 1 teaspoon of chili powder. Cook until potatoes, carrots, and onions are soft. Then, enjoy with some yummy yummy sweet cornbread muffins!

Yum Yum Yum was all we had to say after our dinner. Due to a really long, unexpected meeting, dessert was out of the question, but that's ok!

Oh yeah! Did I mention that Brian really pulled out all the stops for this one? Look at what he bought me:

Such a sweetie...I just love him so much! We had a great night of Modern Family (our new favorite show - thanks for introducing us, Mom!) and cuddling on the couch. It was so nice to just NOT DO ANYTHING for an entire night. It was something we both needed desperately.

I made Brian a box for Christmas when I was 16 with 100 reasons why I love him. The last one stated: I love how all 99 of these reasons were so easy to write. I hope one day to tell you all the reasons I love you, which equal to much over 100. I love you, babe.

On our wedding day, I added 50 reasons to our list in the note I gave Brian.
I'd like to add one more:

151. I love that you always kiss me goodnight and always hold my hand until I fall asleep. I love that you always greet me with a smile and that you haven't left me yet:) I love you!

Let's Rewind and Fast Forward

Well, I'm just going to be honest - the last two months have FLOWN by so quickly, that I haven't even really had time to THINK about updating our blog, so I have decided to rewind the last 2 months for you guys then fast forward really fast to let you in on what all has gone on in our new life. So here goes...

Let's just say that our first weekend as a married couple here in San Angelo was QUITE the eventful one. We hated leaving Jamaica, but we were ready to get home and see our families and share all our great stories! We arrived here in San Angelo about 11:00 pm on Friday night...

We slept as late as we could, but Saturday was quickly upon us, which meant it was time to celebrate another wedding and new life in the making - ELIZABETH WAS GETTING MARRIED! Brian was an usher in the wedding, and we didn't realize until...oh about 11:00 am that Brian DID NOT HAVE A WHITE SHIRT TO WEAR IN THE CEREMONY! Fantastic...and so our first clothing purchase as a married couple was spent on Brian....somehow, this situation seems a little flipped. Either way, we got Brian dressed and ready to go, and Liz looked beautiful! We are so happy for you guys! Congrats to Mr. & Mrs. Odom!
Before we knew it, it was Sunday (two days of being married at home)! We met with our families for lunch and shared all of our crazy Jamaican stories! Would you like to hear some?
1. We stayed at the Sandals Resort in Negril, Jamaica, which was absolutely beautiful and breath taking. Another thing that took our breath away, or maybe just blinded us for a second, was the neighboring resort....oh yeah! Did I mention that the neighboring resort was a NUDE resort? Talk about taking your breath, sight, smell, hearing, and every other sense you can think of away! Those people did EVERYTHING naked...they drank naked; they swam naked; they yelled naked; they snorkled naked; they scuba dived naked...I'm not kidding you - these people were IN LOVE with their birthday suits. It was quite an eye opener, but I have to point out that they were definitely having the most fun on the island....I just wonder what they really told their boss when they said they were "going on a family vacation."
2. Every night the main stage hosted a show of some sort. The second night we were there, they had a game show night, so everyone was being called up to play games! And when I say everyone...I mean Brian and I got called for EVERY SINGLE GAME THEY PLAYED! I ended up being the week's "Limbo Queen"...

And Brian....well Brian didn't get into the games as much as I did...

3. So there were these two guys that took Brian and I snorkeling every day...I'm pretty sure I made it clear in the earlier post that we LOVED snorkeling...and yes, every day is NOT an exaggeration. The guys' names were Mackie and Davion. Mackie was short for, you guessed it, Mackenzie, SO we became their number ONE buds! They would always yell out to us on the beach, and they were always picking on Brian on the snorkeling boat...they were great guys!

Anyway...we were home from Jamaica, and one thing kept hanging over our heads....thank you notes. We were caught up when the wedding came (Thank Goodness!), but we didn't realize that we were blessed by so MUCH more at the wedding! Luckily, with the help of our wonderful mothers and my sister, Morgan, we finished the thank you notes before the second week of school!
Yes, you read that right - SCHOOL! Sunday was over, and Monday came, but with Monday came something a little more daunting...Fall 2010. Shoot us both.
Let me clue you guys in on Brian and I's schedules this year:
Mackenzie's Schedule
MWF: 8-11 Class
MW: 2-3:15 Class
No Class Tuesday or Thursday
Just Work from 8-12

Brian's Schedule
MWF: 11-1 Class
W: 2-5 Lab
TR: 9:30-12:30 Class
TR: 2-3:15 Class
MTWRF: 3-6:30 Track Practice

I don't know if you all put two and two together there, but our schedules mean we see each other from 7:00-7:40 am every day, 1-2 pm Monday and Wednesday, 12:30-2 pm Tuesday and Thursday, then anytime after 6:30 pm...unless it's Tuesday, then I am already gone for Bible Study, and if it's Thursday, Brian's on his way to Poker Night...in other words, since the honeymoon, our time together has been cut about...oh like 80%...awesome.
Great part about it though....it makes the time we do get to see each other amazing:)

School has pretty much taken over the vast majority of our lives; our classes are really tough this semester, but we do all we can to make each other smile every day!

Pretty soon, our one month anniversary was here! I know it sounds crazy, but it really felt like we had only been married a few days and September 14th was upon us...what's crazier is that today is October 12th! You know what that means!!! Anyway, we had a nice little dinner together at the house, complete with wine, in our brand new wine glasses (Thanks Trish Corbell!).
Oh! And I made a cake to celebrate the holiday:)

We made our first road trip to Abilene for Brian to take his GRE test. It was a fun trip (for me anyway)! We went to the zoo and had a blast. I shopped while Brian racked his brain...he did an AWESOME JOB!!! He has officially applied to graduate school at Angelo State University in hopes of being admitted into the Physical Therapy Doctorate program! If he gets accepted (which we all know he will!), he will start grad school in June:) I am so proud of my hubby...sorry babe, but I have to brag on you a little bit!

And now I must introduce you all to our newest edition - Remi. It was Sunday, September 19, 2010 that I lost my best friend to man's best friend. We got a puppy:) He is a vizsla, and he is ABSOLUTELY adorable! He and Brian make the best pair! We picked him up in Goldthwaite, where we stopped in to see Coach Proffitt, Heather, and our sweet flowergirl, Brynlee. And we have good news! Heather is pregnant again and due in April! Congratulations Proffitt family:) We love you so much! Remi was such a gentleman at the Proffitt's house. He has been our pride and joy (and the reason for my occassional abandonment;)). Meet Remi...

And see Remi's first photo with his new best friend...

And see Remi's first photo with his sweet mommy...

And see Remi in action...

Isn't he a sweetie?! We just love him so much!

Well, our latest excursion was with our sister, Morgan, to Arlington to watch the FIGHTIN' TEXAS AGGIES play the Arkansas Razorbacks/Hogs/Incests/WeDon'tKnowWhyTheyCallTheirMascotTenThousandDifferentNames. The game was in Cowboy stadium which was AWESOME! We had a great time!!

Well...I think you're all caught up to date on the Holik Family! We will be checking in every so often, so don't quit reading today:) We will be back...

From our family to yours...Happy Autumn!

Ya Mon!

Yes, we were "jumping for joy" on our honeymoon in Negril, Jamaica! It was so much fun, and we learned SO much about the Jamaican heritage. Most importantly, we learned the all time favorite (and definitely most used) phrase - "Ya Mon!" Brian even bought a T-shirt that pictured a little Jamaican smiley face that said the phrase. It was definitely a fun-filled experience.
We snorkeled.

We tubed.

We laid out by the sun.

We snorkeled some more.

We kayaked.

We hung out by the pool.

We dressed up for dinner.

Oh! Oh! And we kissed under water....while snorkeling...we really liked snorkeling.

Overall, it was a great trip! We had so much fun, and we met a lot of really neat people! Lucky for us, the beach next to us was a NUDE resort, so whenever we felt like bearing our birthday suit, we hit the party next door......JUST KIDDING! There was a nude beach next to us, but we kept our distance....a really LONG distance. We are so excited to start our new life together, and we know that it won't always be this "Honeymoon" phase, but that's ok-we are ready to take it all on...ready or not, here we come!
